St Louis Island

Wonderful sight of St Louis Island crossing the bridge from mainland Senegal

St Louis bridge

The old French bridge linking St Louis Island with the mainland. The town of St Louis is built on an island in the River Senegal near the point where the river flows into the South Atlantic Ocean.

St Louis building, Senegal

Old colonial French two storey shop houses in St Louis. They are past their best now but still give the town some charm. It was a pleasure to stroll along these quiet streets.

St Louis Street

St Louis street scene. More recent shops, shacks and markets near the fishing village on the spit of mainland fronting the Atlantic Ocean.

St Louis Fishing village

The bustling fishing village with St Louis island in the background.

Fish Drying St Louis Senegal

Fish being preserved by drying in the hot Senagalese sun. St Louis is very near the border with Mauritania and the edge of the Sahara desert.
