Borobudur is a magnificent Buddhist Stupa built on the foundations of an even more ancient Hindu temple. It is a huge man made stone pyramid with seven levels.
The whole monument is dotted with Buddha images carved in stone. The summit is surmounted by huge beehive shaped stone lattices each containing a seated stone Buddha. Here one of the stone lattices has been removed to reveal the Buddha image within.
Allan and Margaret admiring the magnificence of Borodudur. It is deservedly one of the most visited sites in Java and Indonesia. Well worth taking the time to see it.
Borobudur is protected on three sides by looming mist covered mountains with a tree covered plane to the front. Looking down on the palm trees at the front. Whisps of mountain mist dispersing in the morning sun.
The monument is covered by intricate and detailed carvings depicting the stages from earthly pursuits to the attainment of Buddhist Nirvana at the summit.
There are many wonderful carvings at Borobudur. Some of the most exquisit however are preserved in the National museum in Jakarta.
