Ferries pass mid stream in the wide River Gambia between Banjul and Barra. The deck passangers fill the ferry using every space available between the vehicles.

Awa and Margaret

Awa and Margaret standing on the steps of our house in Fajara. Awa entertained us with stories about the warmth and friendliness of people in Senegal. She also told us lurid stories about bandits and armed robbery.

Our ever cheerful friend and watchman Korante described his home village in Mali and encouraged us to make the trip.  He had travelled widely in West Africa and was a fund of useful tips and information.

Margaret walking Having lived for over a year in Gambia we were well used to the heat and conditions. We had travelled widely in Gambia on local transport and knew how things worked.

Dental van commissioning

Commissioning the Mobile Dental Clinic at Essau on the north bank of the River Gambia. The generous Kombo Beach Hotel financed a dentist, two nurses and a driver. The hotel also paid for all the drugs, supplies, instruments, fuel and maintenance needed to operate the clinic.

The Mobile Dental Clinic was a modern fully equipped unit which brought free dental treatment to the rural areas of Gambia for the first time.

One of the first patients of the Mobile Dental Clinic. The unit was in huge demand and was successful in treating thousands of patients up and down the country.

Principal Nursing Officer Mam Marie Jagne receiving on of the fob watches from Allan. The watches were a gift from Trinity Church Abingdon.

Best nurse awards, Gambia

The Best Nurse Awards. Each department selected, by popular vote, the nurse who contributed most in terms of diligence, enthusiasm, professionalism, patient care and punctuality. The successful nurse received a Trinity nurses watch. The most outstanding nurse won a gold fob watch.
